Who is Dan?

Dan Dutterer, Founder of Poetic JusticeDan Dutterer began acting classes as a child in Charleston, SC, and spent three years performing and taking classes with The Dock Street Theatre. In Sarasota, Florida he joined the high school drama club and performed there for three years. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Theater Arts from Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Seeking further education, Dan was accepted to Julliard, but chose to attend the F.S.U./Asolo Conservatory in Sarasota (one of only 12 students to be accepted each year). His graduate studies took him to The Burt Reynolds Institute for Theatre Training, The Olney Playhouse, and The Williamstown Theatre Festival. He has worked professionally in Texas, Alabama, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Florida.

Favorite roles for Dan have been Horatio in Hamlet, Phillip in Orphans, Santa Ana in The Lone Star, Bartholomew in Jesus Christ Superstar, Lt. JG Dan Kaffee in A Few Good Men, Stewpot in South Pacific, and Ellard in The Foreigner.

Relocationg to Asheville, North Carolina brought Dan into the world of poetry and collaboration with The Poetry People. Poetic Justice emerged as an opportunity to offer performance poetry to children of all ages.

Dan is focused on educating and entertaining students by showing them what poetry has to offer, through the magic of theatre and live performance. Dan finds fulfillment working with children (some would say he’s still a kid himself!) He believes that kids are able to absorb and understand an amazing amount, if one takes the time to explore the world of literature, poetry and art with them, on the appropriate level. Dan has offered his unique take on poetry in many places, such as the YWCA, Books-a-Million, the FENCE Foothills Storytelling Festival, Barnes & Noble, Dickens in the Village, the Montford Arts Festival, and schools across the southeast.
